LOCATION: A 300 square foot unfinished space in the ground floor mall of a 40-story office building.
CHALLENGE: The space is small, so wall space for sales displays is very limited, but it is wide, which invites the use of a small freestanding display in front of the sales counter. Usually those types of merchandise stands are low, don’t hold much, and tend to be a nuisance that get bumped a lot by customers. There are several other small competing retail outlets on the mall offering a slightly different mix of items. The owner wants to draw attention to his shop.
SOLUTION: A green-tinted glass window wall with the business logo printed on it catches the eye. A square central cabinet displays magazines on the mall side and houses a large cooler for drinks on the side facing the rear sales counter, where food items are displayed and sold. When the store is operating, the glass doors fold together to provide a smooth circulation pattern around the shop and encourage shoppers to notice the merchandise on the side walls. To add a bit of drama, the cabinet is topped with a custom plexiglas pyramidal light fixture that lights the pyramid-shaped ceiling directly above, and provides soft reflected light to the shop.
To complete the concept, the firm designed the shop’s logo. The shop’s design created a lot of interest and activity in the building. The owner, who has many similar shops around the country, said that this was one of his most profitable.
